Encryption Guide
Some of our exclusive sports coverage is delivered via an encrypted signal due to broadcast rights. Those games or events that are encrypted are clearly marked in our online TV Guide and Sports Lounge sections.

To find out if you need a free Smart Card or new equipment to view our encrypted programs read our FAQ's below. You will need to know whether you receive Australia Network via the IS-5 or IS-8 satellites in order to register.

Only locations eligible to receive our free Smart Cards are listed. We don't have the rights to broadcast Rugby Union in China or Japan. Australia Network is also not available in Europe.

Remember: Viewers receiving us via a cable or satellite operator/rebroadcaster do not need to register for a Smart Card.

Q: Why are you encrypting programs?
Show Answer
A: Under the terms of our agreement with SANZAR, we must encrypt all Rugby Union games to prevent splliage into territories where we do not have the rights e.g. Australia. However, the rest of Australia Network remains Free to Air.

We are supplying and sending Smart Cards for decrypting the Rugby signal free of charge.

Q: What programs are you encrypting?

Q: Do I need a new decoder box?
Show Answer
A: If you are watching Australia Network on IS-8 you may need to upgrade your box. We are using the Irdeto 2 (Version 5) encryption system. Make sure that you check with your retailer that any new box your purchase is compatible with Irdeto "softcell" version 2.09 or later. This should be available in decoder boxes built after 2001. Some models which do work include: Humax, AMT and Standsound.

In some cases, you may be able to buy an "expansion slot" or "conditional access module (cam)" for your existing box, which is cheaper than upgrading.

Part #904505The cam module required is the Eurocam with revision 1.10b or later. (Part #904505). It looks like this:

If you are watching Australia Network via IS-5 and have a Scientific Atlanta decoder box, you can use your existing system to watch our encrypted programming.

However we need some information about your box so that we can authorise your viewing.

If you are watching Australia Network via IS-2 or IS-5 and haven't registered your decoder box with us, do so by following the steps under IS-5 Decoder registration below.

Q: What if my digital decoder box doesn't have a slot for the card?
Show Answer
A: You may need to upgrade your box if there is no slot. We are using the Irdeto 2 encryption system, which works with the majority of digital decoder boxes available today. Make sure that you check with your retailer that any new box you purchase is compatible with Irdeto "softcell" version 2.09 or later. This should be available in decoder boxes built after 2001. Q: What happens if I don't get a Smart Card?
Show Answer
A: Viewers who watch us via their own direct to home satellite equipment (including hotels and SMATV viewers) are required to get a Smart Card to see our encrypted programs.

If you don't get a card then there will be no picture on the service during an encrypted program. We do not insert replacement programming for viewers without a Smart Card.

Not all of our programming is encrypted however and the service will resume once the encrypted program has concluded.
