Sri Lanka says troops poised to capture rebel headquarters 27/11/2008
08:00:01

The Sri Lankan government says its troops are poised to capture the Tamil Tigers' political headquarters at Kilinochchi.

Government officials say heavy fighting is raging on three fronts around the northern town.

The stepping up of the government's offensive coincides with the rebels "Heroes' week" -- held each year to commemorate ethnic Tamils who have died in the struggle for a separate homeland .

AFP newsagencvy says authorities in Sri Lanka have restricted access to the embattled areas, meaning that claims by either side are impossible to verify.
