Grant for Pacific countries to conserve energy 16/10/2008
12:53:23

Five Pacific island countries will be helped to reduce wasteful energy consumption under an Asian Development Bank grant.

Pacific correspondent, Nasya Bahfen, reports Australia and Norway have donated $US100,000 each to the Clean Energy fund, to help the Cook Islands, PNG, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu improve the efficiency of their energy consumption.

The ADB says it won't be used to develop new sources of renewable energy.

The fund will provide a total of $US1.2 million dollars in technical assistance to the five Pacific countries, who expressed interest in reducing fossil fuel consumption at a 2007 regional sustainability meeting.

The grant is expected to come up with an energy-saving project for each Pacific country involved.
