Burma's detained democracy leader appeals against detention 12/10/2008
08:12:38

Burma's detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has appealed to the ruling junta against her detention.

A spokesman from her party says the appeal was sent by the National League for Democracy on her behalf to the cabinet.

Aung San Suu Kyi approved the final draft of her legal appeal during a meeting with her lawyer Kyi Win in September.

This is reportedly the first time the Burmese regime has accepted the submission of an appeal against Ms Suu Kyi's detention, although it is not clear when the appeal will be heard.

Last month the junta released 9,000 prisoners, including ten political prisoners, in an amnesty ahead of elections planned for 2010, in which Aung San Suu Kyi is barred from standing.
