No change to policy on uranium to India: Smith 08/09/2008
14:07:01

The Australian foreign minister, Stephen Smith, says there'll be no change in Australia's opposition to selling uranium to India despite international approval of a India-US nuclear supply agreement.

Mr Smith is leaving for a five day trip to India later today and will visit New Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad.

He says he welcomes the India-US agreement, but is still opposed to selling uranium to India because it's not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

"The current government has had a long standing policy position that we don't export uranium to a country which is not a party to the nuclear non proliferation treaty," Mr Smith said.

"India is not a party to the NPT, and that's a position that I've made clear to Indian officials and ministers."
