Zardari Pakistan's new president 06/09/2008

Asif Ali Zardari, the widower of slain opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, has been elected president of Pakistan.

Mr Zardari secured 281 votes out of the 426 valid votes polled in the parliament.

Pakistan's two chambers of parliament and four provincial assemblies form the presidential electoral college.

Mr Zardari secured a thumping majority in three of the four provincial assemblies.
