Solomons committe to consider recommmendations over 2006 riots 11/07/2008
18:14:37

The Solomon Islands prime minister, Derek Sikua, has set up a committee to consider the recommendations of an inquiry into Honiara's 2006 Chinatown riots.

Australian newspaper The Age says the Sikua government has officially apologised to the Chinese community for the riots, which took place after Solomons MPs elected Snyder Rini as prime minister following national polls.

In July, a government inquiry concluded the rioting was politically motivated and not caused by anger at Chinese immigrants.

An aide to the prime minister says the Solomons government is also prepared to develop new policies if necessary, to prevent similar rioting.
