MP among dead in bloody day in Afghanistan

It's been a bloody day in Afghanistan, with at last 30 people dead including civilians, Taliban militants and a member of parliament.

An official in eastern Afghanistan says 22 civilians have been killed in an air raid by American-led coalition forces.

The governor of Nuristan says the Afghans were travelling in two vehicles when they were hit.

The United States military has confirmed that an attack took place, but it says the two trucks were carrying militants and there were no reports of civilian injuries.

Meanwhile, unidentified gunmen have shot dead a member of Afghanistan's parliament in the troubled southern province of Kandahar.

Habibullah Janm the head of Kandahar's prominent Alizai tribe, was the 10th MP to be killed since Afghanistan's first democratically chosen parliament was elected in 2005.

And, in Helmand Province, provincial police say 10 Taliban militants have been killed when the mine they were trying to plant in a road exploded.
