Nauru welcomes election report findings 27/05/2008
02:30:09

Nauru's acting president, Frederick Pitcher, has welcomed a Pacific Islands Forum Report into last month's general election.

Mr Pitcher told Pacific Magazine that the government would take on board the minor criticisms made by the Forum's election monitors.

The Forum raised concern over the short time in the leadup to the poll, and that it was conducted under a state of emergency.

Mr Pitcher says that while such a short time was not the government's preferred option, it was left with no choice.

The government of Marcus Stephen was returned with an increased majority in the poll.

It was sparked by a parliamentary deadlock between the ruling party and the opposition lead by former foreign minister David Adeang and former President Rene Harris.
