Solomons police chief says resignation 'voluntary' 08/02/2008
08:07:46

The Solomon Islands police commissioner, Jahir Khan, says his resignation is voluntary.

Mr Khan's resignation comes a week after he was told by the prime minister, Derek Sikua, he had a choice to leave or face a police tribunal.

Mr Khan's appointment, made by former prime minister, Manasseh Sogavare, has been under scrutiny since the change of government in Honiara in December.

The prime minister had written a letter to Mr Khan detailing a charge sheet and a request for explanation.

But Mr Khan has told Pacific Radio News he resigned voluntarily because he wants to move on.

He says he has two job offers to consider - one in the United States and the other in Fiji.
