Solomons Islands police commissioner asked to resign 07/02/2008
14:45:58

The Solomon Islands police commissioner has resigned, after pressure from the government.

Jahir Khan's appointment, made by former prime minister Manasseh Sogavare, has been under scrutiny since the change of government in Honiara in December.

Mr Khan, a Fijian national, confirmed his resignation but refused to reveal the details.

The police commissioner's resignation comes a week after he was told by prime minister Derek Sikua to either resign or face a police tribunal.

The prime minister had written a letter to Mr Khan detailing a charge sheet and a request for explanation.
