The U-S Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice has held talks with Libyan leader Moamar Khadafi.

As John Shovelan reports from Washington, it's the first time in 55 years a U-S Secretary of state has visited Libya.

The visit is largely symbolic and is part of a dramatic turnaround in U.S. relations. In 2003 Libya agreed to give up it's pursuit of nuclear chemical and biological weapons and agreed to pay compensation to the victims of the Lockerbie bombing.

Condoleeza Rice's visit is expected to help U-S oil companies seeking a greater share of Libya's vast oil reserves. Secretary Rice described her visit and talks with Moamar Khadafi as historic.

The US Secretary of State signed agreements on security, education and cultural exchanges.
