05/09/2008 22:11:27 Thai police urge students to refrain from protesting

Thai PM Samak's proposed referendum is an attempt to placate thousands of anti-government protestors.
Police in Thailand have told students to refrain from protesting after two of them were shot by unidentified gunmen in a drive by shooting.

The attack came amid continuing tension in Bangkok, with demonstrators still occupying government headquarters and the embattled Prime minister, Samak Sundaravej, refusing to resign.

Meanwhile, a national referendum proposed by Mr Samak in an effort to defuse the ongoing political crisis, has been dismissed by critics as a stalling tactic.
