Typhoon Nuri is crossing the northern Philippines, triggering heavy rains and warnings of possible storm surges.

It has maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometres an hour at the centre and gusts of up to 170 kilometres per hour.

Nuri has made landfall and is lashing northern Luzon.

Large ares of Luzon are being drenched by heavy rain, including Manila and nearby suburbs, and schools have called off classes in some affected provinces.

Disaster relief officials say they expect storm surges and strong waves in coastal areas.
