05/07/2008 19:58:16 Public unrest charges for 14 Burmese protestors
Burma
In Depth

Burmese authorities have charged 14 supporters of detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi for protesting against the extension of her house arrest

The 14 were arrested on Ms Suu Kyi's 63rd birthday on June the 19th, outside the party headquarters of her National League for Democracy.

A Burmese policeman told AFP news agency they were charged for causing public unrest.

The NLD says it is working for their release and accused the government of illegal detention.

On Friday, four NLD members were each sentenced to a year in jail for urging people to vote "No" in a nationwide constitutional referendum, held in May.

The NLD says another senior party member had been arrested on Wednesday without reason.
