Truck drivers in New Zealand have hailed Friday's national protest a success. The organisers estimate that at least 4,000 trucks crawled in convoy through the centre of New Zealand's main cities to protest against a hike in road user charges. They say the increase will add up to 40 cents a litre to their existing costs. One of the drivers who took part in the convoy, Nigel Boyd, says New Zealanders should support the protest. "Well eventually if we pass the cost on, which we will, they will pay more from the stuff you buy at the supermarket or wherever you want stuff done," he said. "There's nothing that goes into your house other than power and water and gas that's not moved by a truck." Produced by Radio Australia and Australia Network |
