18/05/2008 18:42:53 Australian envoy asks Fiji to tighten security
Fiji
In Depth

Australia's ambassador to Fiji says he is "deeply disappointed" the interim government has rejected his request for Australian police protection in the wake of death threats.

James Bately says he's now urging Suva to beef up his security, after he received two death threats in two weeks amid strained relations between the two countries.

A detailed statement on the threats is expected from Police Commissioner Esala Teleni on Monday.

A police spokesman told the Fiji Sun security has already been stepped up at the homes of all diplomats.

Australia has been one of the most outspoken critics of military chief Frank Bainimarama's regime since the elected government was toppled in a bloodless coup in December 2006.
