18/05/2008 13:34:04 Australia to decrease binge drinking by taxes on alcopops
Australia
In Depth

Australia's Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan says he has no doubt that the sharp increase in tax on pre-mixed alcoholic drinks will cut rates of teenage binge drinking.

But the Federal Opposition says the 70 percent tax increase will just force teenagers onto drinks with a higher alcohol content, or drugs.

The move will earn the government an extra three billion dollars in revenue, and the Opposition is planning to block it in the Senate.
