A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale has rocked southern Taiwan, 12 kilometres southwest of Taitung city.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Meanwhile, the government has offered to provide emergency aid to China's earthquake victims.

The outgoing president, Chen Shui-bian, and Premier Chang Chun-hsiung also offered their condolences to the victims.

Mr Chang says Taiwan is prepared to send rescue teams and provide humanitarian aid to China.

President-elect Ma Ying-jeou, who is due to take office next week, also expressed concern.
