11/05/2008 11:58:30 Burmese officials accused of casting votes for the people.

The military government in Burma has held a referendum on a new constitution which the opposition warns will enshrine army dominance.

One voter in Rangoon told The Democratic Voice of Burma, a pro-democracy television station based in Norway that Burmese officials cast their votes for them.

"You just sign a paper they prepare. Before we go to the polling station, local officers issue a slip to us, and we bring it with us. When we arrive, officials tick a yes vote on it and cast it for us. So we only have the chance to sign that we have cast a vote."
