Indonesia has extradited four rebels wanted in East Timor for the attacks against the island's president and prime minister.

Under armed police escort, the four handcuffed rebels were put aboard a charter plane at the Halim airport in East Jakarta.

More uniformed and plainclothes police, some of them armed, were deployed on the runway as the rebels left for East Timor to face justice over the February 11 attacks.

The four would be handed over to East Timor officials in Bali before making their final flight to Dili.

The identities of the four rebels have not been made public.

The four, all former East Timorese soldiers, were caught by the Indonesians in the weeks following the failed attacks against President Jose Ramos-Horta and prime minister Xanano Gusmao.
