The United Nations in East Timor says the leader of a rebel group accused of trying to kill President Jose Ramos-Horta in February may be getting ready to give himself up.
The UN spokeswoman in Dili, Alison Cooper, says Gastao Salsinha has agreed to remain in a house in Ermera district with several companions until he is joined by two more of his men. Ms Cooper says Salsinha said he'll then surrender to the authorities. East Timor has issued an arrest warrant for Salsinha and 22 others over attempts on the lives of President Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao on February the 11th. Salsinha took command of a group of rebel soldiers after the death of former leader Alfredo Reinado during the February attacks. Presidential advisor Alexander Xavier says Salsinha has been convinced to give himself up following talks with representatives from the army, the Catholic church, and parliament.
