The East Timorese president, Jose Ramos Horta has spoken publicly for the first time since an attempt was made on his life last month.
Dr Ramos Horta recorded a message in three languages at the Darwin Private Hospital, in Australia's Northern Territory, where he is continuing to recuperate from gunshot wounds. In the message he thanked everyone involved in his recovery. "Although I am refraining from making a political speech, this being Easter week, I wish to use this opportunity to thank all who prayed for me, who looked after me, who prayed for me," he said.
