China and India may be economic powerhouses, but the size of their economies are much smaller than we previously thought. That's the surprising finding of a long-awaited World Bank report - which for the first time compared G-D-P based on relative prices rather than market exchange rates. In a single stroke, the report slashed nearly 7-thousand US billion dollars off the real value of the world's economic output.

India's prime minister Manmohan Singh is winding up a three-day visit to Beijing. One of the outcomes of the talks is the lifting of two-way trade to 60-billion dollars by 2010. Some of that trade will pass through the tiny Indian state of Sikkim.

A bid by Singapore Airlines to buy a quarter of China's third-largest airline has fallen through at a shareholder's meeting in Shanghai. The deal came undone amid a series of unexpected moves by domestic Chinese competitors and many analysts believe the central government took action to block foreign ownership in the booming air sector.

Anti-China protesters have been rallying in Vietnam in the past week, apparantly angry over China's claim on the Spratly and Paracel archipelagos in the South China Sea. The islands are considered strategic outposts and have potentially rich oil and gas reserves as well as plentiful fishing grounds. The rallies in support of Vietnam's official territorial claims, were initially tolerated by police, triggering a diplomatic protest from Beijing.

The members of the Association of South East Asian Nations, or ASEAN, have signed off on changes designed to change the organisation's role radically and capitalise on their position between China and India.

The idea is to change ASEAN from a talking shop into a full, rules-based legal entity, with member nations accountable to each other.

Southeast Asian countries are seeking to raise two billion dollars by the end of the year to complete a railway system that will eventually stretch from China to Singapore, and link seven ASEAN countries in the region. After years of delay and funding problems, it's hoped that new funds will be raised during an investors seminar later this year.
