During last year's crisis in East Timor, the police force was demobilised after its running battles with factions of the army and the collapse of both forces. Now after a slow rebuilding process, local officers are joining their international counterparts in providing security for next week's election. East Timor's former interior minister, Rogerio Lobato, was sentenced to seven and a half years jail in March 2007. A panel of three judges found him guilty of distributing police uniforms, ammunition and weapons to a group of civilians led by the rebel army officer Alfredo Reinado. A dangerous standoff is developed in East Timor with rebel leader Alfredo Reinaido threatening to shoot at any security forces which try to arrest him.
