President threatens to call state of emergency - Radio Australia News 06/03/2007
East Timor's president says he may impose a state of emergency to restore law and order in his country.

Clashes involving rock throwers and demonstrators burning tyres in parts of Dili are being blamed on supporters of the fugitive rebel leader, Alfredo Reinado.

President Xanana Gusmao has threatened to impose a state of emergency to stop an outbreak of civil unrest, and if criminal gangs continue to harass people.

He has vowed to use all legal means to pursue the rebel leader.

Britain's foreign office has advised against all travel to East Timor, and the Australian government has approved the voluntary departure of non-emergency staff.
