A Balloon For Allah questions the role of women in today's Islamic belief, and looks into the historic development of the religion. As a child, Norwegian-Turkish filmmaker Nefise, sent balloon letters to Allah. In them, she put all her wonders in hope of getting answers that she could not answer herself. Now she sets out on a journey to unravel some of the mysteries surrounding Islam. She will follow her grandmother's "Sufi" path, when she goes on a quest to find a path back to her grandma's Islam - an Islamic belief which were not dominated by the extremist and fundamentalist ways of thinking - where women are not suppressed by their faith, and male dominant thinking. She talks to both extremist and liberal Islamic believers, and she wonders, if these polarized differences is the reason for the lack of understanding the Islamic life and religion in the Western societies.
