In the Philippines, another struggle took place. The Americans had already announced they would be granting the country its independence, so when the Japanese invasion came in December 1941, the small Philippine Army fought alongside American forces. When the country was occupied, the local population continued to resist or to provide aid and intelligence to the Americans and to carry on fighting as guerillas. These young Filipinos were to form the most extensive guerilla campaign in the Pacific, killing thousands of Japanese soldiers. When the Americans returned, the guerillas fought alongside them once again, in some of the bloodiest battles of the war.
