Documentary
Emily Kame Kngwarreye was an Aboriginal woman from Utopia in the central Australian red desert. She began painting on canvas when she was 78 years old. In the next 8 years, until her death in 1996, she produced some 3,000 canvasses and was immediately celebrated by the international art world as a modernist in the league of Monet and Jackson Pollock. Her works are now among the most highly priced of all Indigenous art in Australia. This documentary follows the huge blockbuster exhibition of her work that toured Japan's biggest galleries and broke all attendance records there for contemporary art, breaking a record previously held for 10 years by Andy Warhol. 'Emily in Japan' gives a rare insight into the behind the scenes dramas and excitement of this extraordinary landmark exhibition - the biggest ever to tour overseas for a solo Australian artist. For nearly three years, we follow the work of curator Margo Neale, from the National Museum of Australia, as she negotiates her way through a maze of art dealers, collectors and governmental institutions, as well as with the members of Emily's own community.
Arts
For 60 years, Australian photographer Jeff Carter traversed this country in search of stories. He wrote books and articles for the magazines of the time like People and Pix. And he never travelled without a camera. From the outset, Carter was drawn to document and celebrate the lives of working folk in the bush. From charcoal cutters and kangaroo shooters to dog trappers and drovers, his archive of wonderful images records a way of life that in many ways no longer exists. Sunday Lights is pleased to present this beautiful documentary celebrating Jeff Carter's remarkable archive of Australian life.
