Glasses, towers and castles
The crystal of Ireland
Ernie soaks in history when he visits Waterford in the south of Ireland. He starts off learning about the city's famous crystal - which of course is Waterford Crystal. The glass blowers serve a five-year apprenticeship and spend another five years learning 100 designs off by heart. Ernie's attempt at moulding a handle for a jug confirmed that it wasn't a skill he would pick up quickly. Moving on to take in the other sites, Ernie visits an ancient tower originally used to ward off enemies. When the Normans arrived in the 1100s they turned the tower into a mint created the very first piggy bank from pig clay. The Normans are also responsible for Waterford Castle, which these days is a very grand place to stay - complete with a presidential suite. Rumour has it there is also a resident ghost. |
