Monday, 4 October  2004  Agility Dogs

Play the video and see some amazing dogs. The dogs and their owners take part in a competition called the National Agility Trials.

ALLAN SCHMIDT: This is Jack. He's probably one of the faster dogs going around at the moment but he's … because he's so fast we generally make mistakes so if he goes good there aren't too many that'll beat him.

JENNY MARSHALL: Twister is a Hungarian Puli. She's a Hungarian sheep dog they're actually bred to live with the flock and look after the flock and protect them from wolves and things like that. That was their original breeding. Here in Australia they don't do very well on sheep, she doesn't (laugh)

But they are a very agile breed and so agility is just right up their alley.

ALLAN SCHMIDT: I guess you could describe it as horse jumping for dogs. It gives the dogs a chance to tear around over obstacles but you try and get a bit of control around it.

The weave poles is probably the most interesting one because it's the most unnatural act to do with a dog I guess and that's getting the dogs to weave through 12 poles and they just weave in and out of them.

It can be really difficult when you get out in a competitive environment where to overcome the urge to say to get really frustrated and nine times out of ten when the dog makes a mistake it's probably something you did that was really stupid.

JENNY MARSHALL: She likes telling me what to do hence she barks at me all the time, if I'm a bit slow she tells me what to do.

JENNY MARSHALL: What I love is the challenge, is that you are going out their with your dog, you're working as a member of a team and you have to actually go out there and beat the course.

LORIS CAMERON: I first started off to get fit. I don't know whether I succeeded or not but no it's a terrific sport yeah it really is -- getting dogs out of the back yard, getting dogs to mix together; people mix together.

LORIS CAMERON: It's when you make it as a team and you go round perfectly. That's the high, that's when you really feel great when you get together as a team and it all works.
