Sajithra Nithi - Profile
The tragic bushfires in Victoria 2009 will be forever remembered as 'Black Saturday'.
Sri Lankan journalist Sajithra Nithi, from the Whittlesea Review, was only a rookie when she was catapulted into covering this catastrophic event .
Covering Black Saturday was more than a professional challenge for Nithri, who says her involvement went deeper than that.
"Almost 200 people died and some were people I knew. Trying to balance personal feelings with being professional was a big challenge for me".
As difficult as it was for Nithi, Black Saturday showed her first hand what Australian mateship was all about, especially in rural communities.
"I think the bushfires really did bring out the best in those communities".
This episode of Australia & Me reveals how Nithi's keen eye and willingness to share human stories in turns teaches her a thing or two about the Australian spirit.
